Black Panther director Ryan Coogler recently announced the release date of the much-anticipated Black Panther 2 at D23 in Anaheim, California on Saturday.
Black Panther 2 will hit theaters May 6, 2022.
Coogler remarked on the long production schedule. “We’re not taking our time, we’re really trying to get it right,” he stated.
Coogler has delivered a treatment, complete with a villain and a new title, though neither he nor studio chief Kevin Feige would reveal the details.
Black Panther, starring Chadwick Boseman, grossed $700 million domestically and $1.3 billion worldwide, becoming the second highest grossing Marvel movie of all time domestically behind Avengers: Endgame. Black Panther was also nominated for seven Academy Awards and won three for Best Costume, Best Production Design and Best Original Score.
The film also made history with its nearly all-black cast. Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Forrest Whitaker, Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira, and Angela Bassett starred alongside Boseman.
